1) What is the Mass Save® program?

Mass Save® is an energy efficiency initiative designed to help Massachusetts residents lower their energy bills and reduce their environmental footprint. Sponsored by major utility providers in the state, it offers rebates and incentives for home energy upgrades, including heating systems, appliances, and insulation.

It all starts with a no-cost energy assessment, during which a certified professional will evaluate your home’s energy efficiency and suggest available upgrades. Based on this assessment’s findings, you can apply for rebates and incentives to offset the cost of energy-saving improvements.

Ductless mini-splits—a type of air-source heat pump—are among Mass Save’s most popular upgrades. If you’re replacing an older heating system like oil, propane, or an electric resistance heater, the Mass Save® mini-split rebate program offers generous incentives and financing options to make your home’s transition to energy efficiency more affordable.

2) Why choose a ductless mini-split system?

Ductless mini-split systems, a smaller version of an air-source heat pump, use advanced technology to regulate the temperature in your home. They don’t require ductwork, so mini-splits are perfect for homes without existing air-conditioning infrastructure. They provide zoned temperature control, so you can heat or cool specific rooms in your home without wasting energy on unused spaces.

These energy-efficient systems can slash utility bills, and you can offset their upfront cost significantly, thanks to the Mass Save® rebate and financial incentives.

3) Mass Save® mini split rebate: How it works

The Mass Save® mini split rebate helps make installing these energy-efficient systems more affordable. Follow these simple steps to take advantage of it:

  • Step 1: Schedule a home energy assessment
    • Sign up for a no-cost energy assessment with a Mass Save®–approved specialist like Wattson Home Solutions. This process will ensure your home is eligible and ready for installation. And if your home needs weatherization improvements, you may qualify for additional savings.

  • Step 2: Hire a qualified contractor
    • Select a reputable contractor such as Wattson Home Solutions from the Mass Save® Heat Pump Installer Network. Your contractor will help you select the right mini-split system for your home and handle the installation.

  • Step 3: Submit your rebate application
    • After installation, submit your rebate form along with all required documentation (proof of installation, system specifications, etc.). You can typically expect your rebate within eight weeks.

4) Mass Save® mini-split rebate and incentives

Working with a trusted home energy specialist like Wattson Home Solutions unlocks a wide range of financial incentives, from substantial rebates and flexible financing to generous tax credits. Let’s take a closer look at the savings you could enjoy:

a) Mass Save® heat pump rebate

Mass Save® offers a rebate for installing energy-efficient ductless mini-split systems. It’s available to Massachusetts residents replacing oil, propane, electric resistance, or natural gas heating systems.

The program offers two tiers of rebates, depending on whether you upgrade all or part of your heating system:

  • Whole-home heat pump systems are eligible for a rebate of $3,000 per ton of system capacity (up to a maximum of $10,000), provided the system will be the home’s sole source of heating and cooling.
  • Partial-home heat pump systems offer rebates of $1,250 per ton of system capacity if the mini-split is used in conjunction with an existing heating system, such as a boiler or furnace.

The ‘per ton’ measurement refers to a heat pump system’s capacity; a single mini-split system’s capacity typically ranges from one to three tons. Your home’s ideal system will depend on the size of the area you wish to heat and cool, and other factors like insulation and the number of windows.

b) Mass Save® heat pump financing

In addition to rebates, homeowners can qualify for interest-free financing on up to $25,000 through the Mass Save® HEAT Loan program. This loan features affordable monthly payments without any fees, helping you spread the cost of your home improvement upgrades over time.

c) Federal tax credit

Homeowners installing energy-efficient air-source heat pumps can also take advantage of the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit, part of the U.S. government’s initiative to promote energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions.

You could qualify for up to $2,000 toward the equipment, labor, and installation costs of an eligible heat pump system through this federal tax credit. To claim it, file IRS Form 5695 with your federal tax return.

Upgrading to a ductless mini-split system with help from Mass Save® and Wattson Home Solutions is a smart way to make your home more comfortable and energy-efficient. Whether you’d like to replace your outdated heating system or lower your energy bills—or both!—you can, thanks to these generous financial incentives.

Now’s the time to invest in your home’s more sustainable, cost-effective future. We look forward to helping you choose your new heating system.
