1) Mass Save® rebates for homeowners
The Mass Save® residential rebate program is a fantastic incentive for Massachusetts residents to upgrade their homes’ energy efficiency. This innovative initiative covers every aspect of home energy use, from appliances and heating to insulation and windows—and more! Here’s our at-a-glance guide to all the ways you can save with Mass Save® in 2025.
a) Heating & cooling
Heating and cooling are two of the most energy-intensive systems in your home, so upgrading them can slash your utility bills. Here’s how Mass Save® residential rebates and incentives make these improvements more affordable for Massachusetts homeowners like you.
- Air source heat pumps: Air source heat pump systems that are a home’s sole source of heating and cooling are eligible for a rebate of $3,000 per ton of system capacity. Partial systems, used in conjunction with an existing heating system, are eligible for rebates of $1,250 per ton of system capacity. Air source heat pump rebates, including those for ductless mini-split systems, are capped at a maximum of $10,000.
- Ground source heat pumps: Whole-home ground source heat pump systems qualify for a rebate of $15,000. Partial systems are eligible for $2,000 per ton of system capacity, up to a maximum of $15,000.
- Income-based enhanced incentives: Income-eligible households qualify for enhanced heating rebates, including up to $16,000 for air source heat pumps and up to $25,000 for ground source heat pumps. In addition, these households can also enjoy incentives for upgrading existing fossil fuel equipment to high-efficiency models.
- Room air conditioners: Purchases of an ENERGY STAR® certified room air conditioner qualify for a $40 rebate.
- Integrated controls: Households installing an integrated control to maximize heat pump efficiency can receive a rebate of up to $1,500.
- Smart & programmable thermostats: Rebates for programmable thermostats are capped at $25, while ENERGY STAR® certified smart thermostats fetch rebates of up to $100 each.
b) Water heating
Mass Save® offers residential rebates for installing ENERGY STAR® certified heat pump water heaters. These rebates are available as instant discounts at participating stores or as post-purchase rebates if a professional installs your heater. The exact amount will vary, depending on the model and retailer. These systems can reduce your home’s water heating energy use by up to 60%!
c) Insulation & windows
When it comes to insulation and air sealing, Mass Save® covers 75% of the project cost for eligible projects. For income-qualified customers, the program covers 100% of the insulation cost, making it completely free. This includes improvements to attics, walls, and basement insulation.
Additionally, if you’re replacing single-pane windows, you can receive a $75 rebate per window for ENERGY STAR® Most Efficient certified models.
d) Appliances & products
Thinking of upgrading your home appliances? Select an ENERGY STAR certified model and enjoy rebates up to the following amounts:
- Dehumidifiers: $30
- Dryers: $50–$200
- Electric cooktops: $500
- Lawn equipment: $75
- Pool pumps: $350
- Room air cleaners: $40
- Washers: $150
- Advanced power strips: Available at no cost through the Income Eligible Program and via a home energy assessment
e) Battery storage & EVs
If you’re a Massachusetts resident with a battery storage system, you can receive incentives for lowering your energy use during periods of peak electricity demand. The Mass Save® ConnectedSolutions program provides consumers with $275 per kilowatt of battery contribution during those hot summer days (and nights) in New England.
Eversource, National Grid, and Unitil customers can also benefit from rebates on electric vehicles and charging stations. The exact amount and eligibility criteria depend on the sponsor, so contact your utility company for more details.
f) Appliance recycling
Mass Save® offers free recycling programs for old refrigerators, freezers, and dehumidifiers. They’ll pick up and properly recycle inefficient appliances, often offering you a small rebate or gift card as an added incentive.
